Never a Lack of Motivation...

This past week, I had a very good week of training. At one point, I had 70 miles in 7 days, but I ended up taking a day off during travel on Thursday.
I finished up the week with a local 5k. The race started at Victory Field, went under Circle Center, then by Bankers Life Fieldhouse, around Lucas Oil Staduim and back. It was probably the coolest route I've ever run during a road race. The race itself was fun and different. The past two races, I've gone out hard, but today there was some better competition I thought. I decided to relax and let someone else set the pace. It felt very easy, and I cant say I was suprised when we came through the mile in 5:22 (about 38 seconds slower than last week). After we made the turn around Lucas Oil at about 1.3 miles, I put in a hard surge to see what the other two who were still with me had. They didnt respond so I kept pushing through 2.5 miles...then relaxed a little. My last two miles were 4:51 and 4:41 for a 9:32. Good stuff...got what I came for...the $100 gift card to Blue Mile ;)
Back to what's important, preparing myself for the 2013 season. This week, a friend of mine who is the best and most thorough Indiana track statistician in the state did me a favor. He put together the list of All-Time Indiana Graduates personal bests at 800 meters. I wanted to see where I ranked...and what he found was very motivating. Below is his list of Indiana high school graduates and their eventual personal bests.
1:47.00 - Jason Briggs - Richmond HS  - Indiana State University - 2004
1:47.14 - Kelly Marsh - Muncie Northside HS - Ball State University - 1977
1:47.59 - Austin Mudd - Center Grove HS - University of Wisconsin - 2012
1:47.64 - Neil Carter - Frankfort HS - Purdue University - 1983
1:47.87 - Mark Rodholm - Carmel HS - Indiana University - 1986
1:47.89 - Michael Taylor - Portage HS - University of Arkansas - 2003
1:48.01 - Darrin Wilcoxson - Warsaw HS - Purdue University - 1993
1:48.14 - Tommy Hughes - Jeffersonville HS - Indiana University - 1978
1:48.59 - Troy Furnivall - Warsaw HS - Purdue University - 1985
1:48.64 - Jake Waterman - Noblesville - Wabash College - 2012
1:48.69 - Bruce Banter - Lafayette Jefferson HS - Purdue University - 1980
1:48.70 - Drake Sterling - LaPorte HS - Indiana Invaders - 2012
1:48.73 - Brock Smith - Homestead HS - University of Tennessee - 2000
1:48.84 - Dave DeWitte - Kokomo Haworth HS - Ball State University - 1975

Very motivating. I want to be a lot higher. I would like to certainly be in the top 3 after this season.

With that being said, our state has produced a lot of good 800 runners in the past 5 years. Names like Austin Mudd, Jake Waterman, Mitch Dutton, Connor Claflin, Nate Hendershot, and Matt Dorsey come to mind. I could see these guys all being in the 1:47-1:49 range in the next 3 years.

Speaking of motivation, what an 800 meter final at the Olympics. Duane Solomon dropping three seconds in the matter of 2 months...at 27 years old!
