The past week and a half has been pretty uneventful with the exception of a few minor setbacks that I thought I would share as I know many of my friends have been through the same things...

The two issues I faced were illness and weather-related. It wasn't the best time to compromise training with our first meet just 13 days away, but the timing could have been worse.

Like most athletes in area, we had to find a way to deal with the snowstorms that hit twice in the past week. Normally, I wouldn't think much of the "storms" as neither left more than 5 inches of snow on the ground, but the rest of Indianapolis panicked which affected me. Our indoor training facility shut down on the 26th so the team was forced to scrap our workouts for that day. In addition, I was up North with family for Christmas Eve without an Indoor facility so I missed out on that workout as well.

On Friday, I started to feel a bit of a sore throat. I didn't think much of it and got my normal run in. By Saturday though, my throat was very sore and I was feeling the effects in my chest and head. I scrapped Saturday's workout in favor of a day off in hopes I would recover in time to get back to training before the first race, January 12th.

I took Sunday off as well and am hoping that by the time I wake up Monday, I will be feeling good enough to practice and get in at least a portion of my written 200 workout. This is supposed to be my first workout in which I can actually run with someone in quite a while so I'm pretty excited.

Admittedly, I am not always the most patient or wise about training through sickness and injury. I can't honestly say I've ever taken time off for sickness so this past week has been me trying to act grown up. I learned though from some failures I've had trying to run through sickness that you can really hurt the immune system by trying to bust hard workouts. In the past, I've prolonged some sicknesses up to a month by not being smart about it.

The past two days, I have been taking a steady dose of cold medicine, Echinacea, Zicam, orange juice, fluids, and vitamins trying to kick the virus. In the grand scheme of things, I would much rather be sick now than any time in January-February and have to miss critical workouts or races. I think at 25 years old, I'm finally starting to figure out this recovery thing.

Hopefully next time I blog, I will be able to share a kick butt workout that I just got done with in preparation for UK on the 12th.
